St. John of San Francisco and Shanghai was a mighty wonderworker like of old even in our modern times. He was a brilliant student then teacher from his seminary days, and great faster and an extraordinary ascetic, living for most of his adult life on less than an hour of sleep each night. Made bishop and shepherding his flock in Shanghai, China in the turbulent times after the fall of Russia to Communism, he was loved greatly by those he ministered to, and worked wonders daily, showing forth clairvoyance, healing, the knowing of each heart, and reaching out even to those outside the Faith with love and mercy, signs and wonders.

With the coming of Communism to China, he led his flock in 1949 to the island Tubabao in the Philippines that was regularly ravaged by typhoons, but prayed when the weather was threatening, and turned away such difficulties in the 27 months that he was there. As soon as he and his flock left, their camp was totally destroyed by a typhoon. Finally able to bring those he cared for to America with special permission from Congress to immigrate in 1951, became the ruling hierarch in Western Europe for 11 years, then settled in 1962 in San Francisco where he finished building the wonderful Cathedral dedicated to the Theotokos "Joy of All Who Sorrow", where his incorrupt body now reposes in honor and glory. He was glorified as a Saint on July 2 (June 19th Old Style), 1994, 28 years after he left this world. St. John was a man of our times, and a man of all times, and shows forth many miracles even today to all who pray to him.
